A weather delay may begin with the flight schedule, but passengers experience its consequences throughout the airport.

A decline in satisfaction around a cluster of gates could reflect overcrowding after several delayed departures. None of these signals explains why the flight was delayed. That's not their purpose.

The goal isn't to respond equally to every signal. It's to help teams identify where limited resources can have the greatest impact.
Passenger Experience Should Be Part of Disruption Recovery
Airport recovery is typically viewed through an operational lens. Flights return to schedule, gates clear, queues shrink, and passenger movement begins to resemble a normal operating day again.
But operational recovery and passenger experience recovery don't necessarily happen at exactly the same time.
The 2025 J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study provides an interesting indication of how much the airport environment itself can influence the experience. Despite record passenger volumes, widespread flight delays, and crowded terminals, overall airport satisfaction increased by 10 points. J.D. Power attributed much of that improvement to factors including food, beverage and retail offerings and the ease of traveling through the airport.
That suggests a disruption doesn't have to define the entire passenger experience. What happens elsewhere in the terminal still matters.
A terminal may appear to have returned to normal while passengers in a particular concourse are still dealing with overcrowded facilities, long service queues, or the lingering effects of several hours of disruption.
That raises a useful question for airport teams: How quickly did the passenger experience recover?
Real-time passenger feedback can help answer that question by showing whether sentiment returns to its normal range as the operation stabilizes. Teams can see which locations recovered quickly, where negative feedback persisted, and whether particular operational responses appeared to improve the experience.
This makes passenger experience part of the recovery process rather than something assessed only after the event is over.
Every Disruption Can Make the Next Response Better
Although airports cannot predict exactly when irregular operations will occur, they can learn how their terminals tend to behave when they do.
Looking across previous disruption periods can reveal useful patterns. Certain gate clusters may consistently put pressure on nearby restrooms during extended delays. Customer service locations may repeatedly become bottlenecks after cancellations. Passenger satisfaction may decline faster in parts of the terminal where seating, concessions, or information are limited.
Those patterns can inform how airports prepare for the next disruption.

It's to understand how disruption moves through the terminal and recognize the points where airport teams have the greatest ability to intervene.

Airports cannot prevent every delay, cancellation, gate change, or weather event. But those events don't determine the entire passenger experience.
What happens after the disruption matters too.
